SWEET & SAVOURY SNACKS IN GREECE
According to the latest research from Euromonitor International, sweet and savoury snacks in Greece grew 2% in current value terms in 2009 to reach EUR750 million.
The main driver for change in Greece is the increasing consumer awareness of the benefits of healthy eating. As a result, natural snacks such as nuts and fruit snacks or healthier formats, for example reduced salt, have been key growth drivers. New product developments in most categories, including chips/crisps and popcorn have been centred on this trend. Companies are therefore looking to reduce the content of saturated fats, salt and preservatives in their products in an effort to dispel consumers’ health worries.
Artisanal, which is historically strong in Greece, increased its retail value share by six percentage points in 2008. Artisanal continued to lead sweet and savoury snacks, accounting for a 26% share of retail value sales in 2008, thanks mainly to its strength in large, growing categories such as nuts.
Lay’s and Tsakiris increased their retail value shares in 2008 thanks to new premium varieties of chips/crisps. Organic nuts registered the fastest growth in nuts, while “no added sugar” products grew best in fruit snacks.
Sweet and savoury snacks is expected to continue to grow by a 2% retail volume and constant value CAGR over the next five years. The category’s performance will depend most on the sales growth of nuts, the biggest category in sweet and savoury snacks in Greece. Thus, maturity is expected to limit the growth in nuts to a 2% CAGR in both retail volume and constant value terms.
