SWEET & SAVOURY SNACKS IN RUSSIA
According to the latest research from Euromonitor International, retail sales of sweet and savoury snacks in Russia registered value growth of 7% and volume growth of 2% in 2009.
Due to a decline in consumer income, many consumers traded down to low-cost products at the expense of those in value-added segments. Market saturation resulted in some key snack categories especially nuts, and sunflower seeds.
Despite the wide variety of flavours on offer, there remained strong opportunities for new tastes and flavours of chips/crisps. Many manufacturers introduced complex flavours influenced by international cuisines in order to boost consumer interest. Obesity rates in Russia are growing and health concerns are increasingly raised by consumer groups and the media Healthier snacks with lower fat and salt content have low penetration in Russia but there is growing interest in these better-for-you products..
Due to a diversified portfolio and leadership in other sweet and savoury snacks, the largest company within that segment, Sibirsky Bereg continued to lead the overall sweet and savoury snacks category with Frito Lay ranked second due to its leadership in chips/crisps.
