SWEET & SAVOURY SNACKS IN NEW ZEALAND

According to the latest research from Euromonitor International, retail sales of sweet and savoury snacks in New Zealand registered current value growth of 4% and volume growth of 2% in 2009 to reach value sales of NZ$339 million (€191.5 million).

Sweet and savoury snacks has seen a remarkable shift to healthier alternatives, particularly over the past three years, mainly fuelled by regulatory attempts to limit sales of ‘unhealthier’ snacks in schools and other public places. The two main players, Bluebird and Griffins, both offer healthier options in traditional snack categories, such as the Health Plus and Grainwaves lines from Bluebird and the latest introduction of Solay from Griffins Foods. The continued development of vegetable and grain-based chips and rice extruded snacks will see the sweet and savoury snacks sector compete strongly with other snack categories such as confectionery and snack bars. The continued trend of more frequent snacking occasions has seen sweet and savoury snack manufacturers lead the way in single-serve pack sizes to cater for changing consumer consumption habits.

Bluebird Foods continued to lead sweet and savoury snacks in 2008 with a value share of 47%. Griffin Foods, although ranked second, witnessed the biggest fall in share in 2008, from 24% to just under 23%.  This loss is mainly due to the re-branding of a number of lines to incorporate the UpperCuts banner, which is now know as Eta in chips/crisps, while other sub-brands have been withdrawn.

It is expected that the Solay range of healthy chips/crisps and the Bluebird Kiwi As range will perform well over the short term. However, there is a possibility that the latter concept will be a “fad” and not be sustainable over the forecast period.
