Chips (crisps in the UK) are the most popular snack on the UK. Around 8,500 million packets of chips are sold every year, and the average person eats 3.5kg of chips per year. Chips were first sold in England in the early 1900s by a man called Frank Smith. He set up a factory to make his new product, but it was very different from today's chip factories.

The potatoes were cut, cooked, drained and packed by hand, and the huge tank of vegetable oil was heated by a gas furnace. Today, machines and computers have been used to replace processes previously done by hand. But people are still needed to check that the machines are doing their job and that the chips are the right quality. The process is fast and controlled. Turning potatoes into packets of chips takes about 12 minutes! |
