Glossary of terms

The following terms could be explained or introduced when using the From Potato to Packet poster.

automated worked by machines pallets platforms which can be put on wheels for transporting boxes in the factory
biodegradable can be broken down by bacteria or other biological agents primary packaging packaging which comes into direct contact with the product
conveyor belt a moving production line to carry ingredients from one stage of manufacture to the next (as at a supermarket checkout) processing the stages that foods go through to make them into products
criteria the characteristics which something is designed to and can be evaluated against, e.g. size or shape production the process of making products
diet the foods a person typically eats quality the standard that the product should meet
foreign bodies e.g. dirt, stones, insects which are not wanted in the product and must be removed quality checks checks carried out during manufacture to make sure the product is being made to the correct quality or standard
fryer a large industrial cooker which uses hot oil to fry foods raw ingredients the ingredients or materials that go into making a product
manual worked by hand secondary packaging the outer packaging used to transport large quantities of packaged goods from factory to shops
manufacture the process of making products in industry (in large quantities) specification a detailed statement which describes what the product should do and what it should be like
manufacturer the person in industry who makes products substandard below the required standard or quality
nutrients the chemicals found in foods which are essential for good health
