Frank Smith (see technology) sold his chips in bags made of grease-proof paper. The bags were not sealed because the chips were sold fresh from carts in the street. Today's packaging is designed to keep chips fresh for longer. It also protects the chips from substances which could make them unpleasant or harmful to eat. Most chip packets are now made from film or foil. The packet prevents moisture making the chips soggy. It also prevents light and oxygen reaching the chips, which can affect their quality. Manufacturers minimise the effect of their packaging on the environment. Wherever possible, chip manufacturers use packaging materials which can be burnt: either foil or film. It may be possible to use biodegradable material in the future. Many of the outer cardboard boxes are made from recycled paper.
